Photographer’s Note

Luxembourg city enjoys probably the most unusual natural setting of all European capitals. The Old Town consists of the upper part, perched on top of a 100m sandstone outcrop with steeply sloping slides skirted by two rivers, Alzette and Petrusse, and the lower part, situated in the tranquil valleys of these two rivers. The two parts are completely unlike each other and feel in fact like two different towns. While the upper part is a lively city, complete with its European institutions, the lower part feels like it is frozen in time from 200 years ago. For pedestrians, the two parts are connected by an elevator cut inside the sandstone rock.

This image is a little experiment. It was produced from two separately scanned photos taken from the same point in the lower town. The upper part of the image shows the upper town on the cliff, while the lower part shows the reflection of the same scenery in the quiet waters of the Alzette river. Because I couldn't use a stitching software here, I have just put two images next to each other on the same canvas in Paint Shop Pro, and blurred the border. In this way, a small part of the cliff, which in reality was "between the two images", was left out. I find it an interesting way to "compress the reality" without causing distortion. I haven't cropped any of the two images, as I wanted them to have exactly the same size, so the border would divide the frame into two equal parts: the real world and its reflection.
