Photographer’s Note
Typical sight on this highest point between Arequipa and Chivay, more then 4000m. Everywhere you go, as a tourist in Peru, you will meet these ladies, offering you the local artifacts, always strategically placed at the bus stops. These ladies are sellers, like a store owner, they usually do not make themselves what they are offering, occasionnaly, in remote places like here, someone in the family might have knit the sweater or the hat you are buying.
I have composed this photo to show the colorful wares offered and have positionned the Sabancaya volcano between them.
The Sabancaya is a young and active volcano, having erupted in 1750, 1784, 1986, 1988 and 1990.
**** I am posting the original in the workshop*******

Excellent week end,

Hi Charles. I like this shot for its PoV and strong local "colour". The colours appeal to me as they convey a different atmosphere, a different light. Impressive setting for these commercial transactions. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi charles,
A very good daily life image here with excellent details, very nice bold colors, set in a wonderful rural setting with mountains in the background. Fine work and good to look at. TFS. Gerald

Hello, Charles -
As you know, you have an overmanipulated image here; the faces in particular don't look quite right. I took your original from the workshop and tried a number of ideas, but there was too little information in the faces to pull them out. (Try posting at 300 ppi instead of 72.) At one point, I even cropped to vertical to include just the mountain and the sweaters, but I couldn't get that to work, either.
It is a nice composition, and reminds me of my own trips to the Andes, but I can't see how to fix it.
Dan
PS: I did a workshop, but ran out of space to describe what I did. Here is the rest of it:
That left me with the sky, which, I realized when I went to check it against your posting, was not correct. This is a hard one for me, as I haven't figured out to control this sort of thing yet. In this case, I selected for the sky only, using Refine Edge to soften the edges. Then, after a lot of experimentation, I settled on this tool: Channel Mixer, setting the Red channel to Red -113, Green -189; Green channel, Green +47 (which is down from +100), and Blue channel, Blue +89 (again, down from +100). That gave me something close to what I remember the sky being like at that altitude, but a Photoshop expert could do it better.
PPS: Comparing the WS with the original, I am definitely not happy with the sky, the clouds or the mountain. I got the front right, though. Maybe combine the two?

Bonjour Charles,
Marlyse ;-))

Hello Chartles,
First the photo itself. Yes it's a very common scene along the road. Am i mistaken, or is this one taken at that high pass at 4910 meter when going to Chivay? If yes, than we stood at the same spot ;-)
For the technical part were you ask me to look at.
Something isn't right here. The foreground and background have the same luminance, contrast and saturation, that is impossible when you know how far that background is away from the foreground. There you can see the pp work.
When you push away the background in less contrast than it would look more natural. You can see the pp also in the contrast lines around the two woman her clothing and hat. With other words...it's overdone. Less contrast would also help here i think.
I have seen the original in the ws...impossible to work on that one. The original RAW file is something to work on. But seeing the original (and i know how terrible that light can be in Peru) and on the other hand this final image than you made something real nice from it. Not perfect, but you need a high class PS guru to work on it.
Again, it's the contrast what makes it look fake or over the top, but i challence a lot of people to make it better than you did.
PS looks like a magic word, and that is exactly what a is...a magic word. You have to work hard and have the knowledge to work on it...seeing it with that fact you make very good progession...
Regards, Henk

Hi Charles,
Wow , I can't believe you pulled this photo out of that original that is amazing! I have to admit I don't really understand how you did it all but it does appear to have been quite a bit of work, but oh my gosh way worth it!
TFS and I'll hang on to the tips!

Bonjour Charles
As tu utilisé la méthode HDR ?
Amicalement.

Nice shot Charles, gives a hint of the harshness of life in the Andes. Great color and satureation, fine capture.
