Photographer's Note

I got chatting to this aboriginal man, sitting with his friends on the pavement of a side street in Alice. Alice is a center of aboriginal population. They were all drinking some kind of alcohol from plastic bottles. Alcohol dependency is a great problem amongst the aboriginal people. The group lived in a settlement out in the desert. He was interested to learn that I was Irish because their priest and sisters are Irish. He liked the Irish. He also spoke to me about his Catholic faith. They said that they came into Alice sometimes for fun, by that I understood that it was to get drunk. Alcohol is not allowed in the settlement. He was a sensitive and polite man, who made me feel welcome in his country. It was a privilege to meet a member of one of the worlds oldest cultures and to exchange views for a while. Despite the efforts of the government the plight of many aboriginal people is still very sad.
