And yet another shot from the Tikal temples :)

Temple I - The Temple of the Great Jaguar, at Tikal Grand Plaza, 44.2 meter high, built around 695 AD.

Tikal was an important Mayan settlement for over 1500 years, starting about 700 BC. During the Classic Period 300 - 900 AD, the city prospered through trade and military conquest when the population peaked at 100,000. It suffered a mysterious collapse after 900 AD when the cities became deserted and the jungle took over. The lost world of the Maya was rediscovered in 1848. The university of Pensylvnia has uncovered about 10 square miles of structures at Tikal, and there is still much to be done.

It is about 10 km walk to visit all the temples in the park and it is a fantastic experience! You will get the best out of your day in Tikal if you take a cab from Flores at 4 a.m. so you can be at the park before 6 o'clock where there are only few turists around and the sun is about to rise! :)

It is located in El Peten, about 60 km from the tourist island of Flores (tidy Spanish colonial village, perfect for a few days getaway with excellent food, cosy streets and lovely weather) and Santa Elena's airport. There are 1 hour fligts to Guatemala city each day..
