Workshop Note

I worked on two layers, one for the sky and one for everything else. I applied Shadows and Highlights to each. On the ground I increased the shadows element to bring out the detail in the church and surrounding area. In the sky I increased contrast before applying Shadows and Highlights. There I reduced the Shadow slider so that the brooding darkness created by the Contrast wasn't reduced. I wanted more to reduce the glare in the brightest area of the sky.

I applied a rather low level of Unsharpen Mask on the background layer and then worked a bit with the cloning tool at the edge of the Mont in an attempt to reduce the glow noted in your image that was also present before and after sharpening. There is still a bit of glow, but much less. Finally, I increased saturation slightly of both yellow and green to brighten the foreground and building facade.

Finally I merged layers and uploaded. This is quite a bit darker than your excellent rendition, but perhaps a bit closer to the real conditions you found when shooting. See what you think Stephen.
