They hang there waiting for someone or something to pass and grab onto....usually end up down ones neck where they are very itchy.

These Kayan come from Burma. All the small villages they live in in Thailand are run for tourists. The gate fee goes to the manager so they must sell their produce to live. They mostly fled the Burmese Army. The girls are not forced to wear the rings, but do so to uphold their traditions. The rings are solid brass and very heavy, so it is their weight which depresses the collarbones and ribs, the neck is not actually stretched. I visit several of these villages near my home quite often and enjoy chatting with them since most speak Thai after living here for five years or longer. The kids rarely get to go to a school since they have no Thai ID card and are virtually stateless....(and also virtually prisoners). They are resigned to their lot and not depressed about it.

Nice shot and colours. These long banners are not of hill-tribe origin. They are produced by many communities in the Lanna area of Thailand, especially by the Shan communities. They are placed upon poles by the roadside in both directions from the temple where a festival is to be held.

Nice photo and colours, but it looks to me as if it has had a little too much HDR or lightening of the shadows which make it look a bit flat.

Actually she is from the palaung tribe...far from home as they are mostly around the Fang area.

Nice pic.... it looks to me as if they is at the hill-top temple of Doi Suthep where local kids often dress up and do dancing, sometimes in Thai dress like this or often a hill-tribe style. They are all lovely kids and provide nice entertainment for the visitors and make themselves some cash too. Especially at weekends or long summer holiday.
