Great Gierlinski 2008-11-18 12:14

Hi Kevin,
Interesting composition, I like the colours, though would use a grad filter from the top. Another what strikes my eyes is that waterline. Just as it wanted to pour out of the monitor... would work on that. Remember, it's the water taht makes the horizon, not always the top of the mountain or a dune like here, especially when dunes are in constant motion and change their morphology.
Apart from that I like it, as your other works too...
Kind regards,
Michal

Default To Gierlinski: Re: Your Workshop

Hi Michal,

Thanks for your comment and workshop.

In response, I guess it depends on whether one's objective is to capture the scene as it exists, as a souvenir of the moment, or use the image as a basis to create a stylized, or idealized version. I usually try to capture a scene as it is.

If the waterline appears at an angle, it is because the distance to the dune is further on the right side than it is on the left, resulting in the tilted appearance. As for the colour adjustments to the sky and water. The shadows in the dunes are a result of the sun beginning to set on the horizon. At this time of day, I find the colour of the sky takes on a lighter hue of blue than it might have had earlier in the day, while the opposite typically applies to the water surface.

Rather than the horizon, I was trying to capture the undulations in the sand and the resulting shadows, while retaining some water and sky for contrast. The distance to the dunes is quite short, and the body of water, a shallow, rather unsubstantial - and for the desert quite unsual - temporary accummulation of rain water.

Thanks,

Kevin
