daniel, points have nothing to do with photography

they can be a way of largely socializing, though (TE style)
some do that a lot
just as anders says, for plenty of points, writing plenty of (elogious) critiques is enough
if you religiously write your 20 critiques every 24 hours awarding your 'daily' points quota, people will notice you (even if your photos aren't always 'singing') and write (mostly) elogious critiques to your photos aswell, giving you in return their 'daily' point allowance
posting at least 3 photos/week, but even better 5 or 6 helps a lot

... points are a sort of local currency therefor people react to them accordingly (just as they react to their every-day-real-life-currency ;o)

Points are nothing..... You can't exchange them for anything. It is fun though, but get your hopes up too much.
Personnally, I go more for the amount of hits the photo receives. If the thumbnail catches the eye, that is the reward :-)

Just writing critiques about others pictures. If you do this, you will receive critiques and points... or not. In my opinion it's more important to make friends. When you make friends you create a very good circle of healthy critiques, comments and ... points surely. Go ahead.

Hi Daniel,

Belated welcome to TE!

Points were innocently intended to be a measurable way that people could rate an image posted to TrekEarth along with a narrative critique. Somehow though the human factor has largely scuppered that noble (if naive) intent although perhaps not entirely. Simply put, high points do not always equate to good images and good images do not always garner high point tallies. They are really more a social indicator than they are on your images. Lots of people have been on this site for years developing long-lasting virtual (and real) friendships and they tend to spend most of their time viewing and critiquing each others images - just human nature. There is a smaller subset of the more senior members who spend a lot of time critiquing others but they also step out often to offer insights to newer members. Some folks aren't so socially involved but take the route of critiquing as many other images as they can on a regular basis. A fair number of people are likely to reciprocate and the point tally will grow. Sometimes you'll encounter what you will find to be really excellent images that are posted by people who spend little (sometimes no) time critiquing others. A very small subset of these are so good that they just can't be denied but others get very little attention.

I think most people initially view points as a direct statement of the value of their photography. When it doesn't quite work out that way they fall into the normal human mode of trying to fix the problem and gain more points. Part of the problem is that the controllable solution probably revolves more around "gaming" the system vice taking better and more informative images. You then find yourself in the trap of quid pro quo and I'd dare say you start to lose the objectivity and probably don't accomplish much in the end.

I'd say the best thing might be to ask yourself what you'd like to achieve with your photography first and stick with that intent regardless of the number of smileys. I'd encourage you to be respectful and as honest in your critiques as you feel comfortable being. Even if you don't feel quite qualified, just frame your observations within your own likes and dislikes and you can't go far wrong. Honesty won't necessarily make you popular or gain you more points but you may find that you start getting the same type honesty reciprocated. Hopefully, you'll look at your gallery a year from now and see loads of improvement and have made some friends yourself along the way.

Cheers!

Bob G.

forget the points.
best thing is to turn them off before they turn you off.
post your pics, look at the others and do your share of critiques
and you will have fun on this site.

Post big cows on very bright green fields with lots of trees and flowers and a shinny blue sky. Then you will get points. Lots of points. And of course, point 50 pictures a day, preferentially ugly ones, and tell they are magnificent and amazing and have great compositions.
