Great ricardomattos 2020-05-23 17:19

Hi John,

Very nice post of this magnificent tower. The color of the tower is very nice too and with excellent sharpness. I would love explore this place. I did not understand well what is English change ringing.

Best regards

Default To ricardomattos: Change Ringing......

Hi Ricardo,

Thank you for your very kind words about this photograph!

"Change ringing" is a rather complex thing and quite difficult to explain! This bell tower contains 10 different bells, each tuned to a different note. Other bell towers on churches and cathedrals may have a different number - maybe 4 or 6 or 8 or even as many as 16 different bells. These bells can be rung in sequences which may last from a few minutes to a much longer period of time but, as the bells are rung, they are rung in a mathematical sequence which changes with time. And each bell is rung by a single person in the bell tower.

So, if there were, say, eight bells, they might be rung in the sequence 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 followed immediately by 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,7 then1,2,3,4,5,7,6,8 then 1,2,3,4,6,5,7,8 and so on, so that for each sequence there is a "change".

If you have the time, you can read about the subject here:

And here you can watch the people in the tower ringing the bells -

it requires a lot of skill to get the "timing" correct!

Does that help you?

Kind Regards,
