Photographer's Note

This is Timbuktu (Tombouctou), one of the world's most legendary cities, founded in the 12th century. From the early 14th to the 16th century it was one of the richest cities in Africa, basing its wealth on trans-Saharan trade of gold and salt. It also became an important centre of culture and islamic studies, attracting scholars from all over the muslim world.
This picture shows the Djinguereber mosque, originally built in 1327 AD but rebuilt several times since then.
Scanned from a Kodachrome slide.
