Photographer's Note
I would think that everyone who visits Fes goes to see the leather tanneries. There are certainly plenty of photos on TE, including past ones from me.
I know that they are a bit of a cliche but they are great sights with all the dye colours and the coloured skins spread out to dry. Just viewing them is a money making concern as the only views are from leather shops.
So ... no full view this time of the pits just some close up detail. You can see in this photo up what the workers have to stand in ... and it is not good for their health as some of the ingredients are a bit toxic.
Best in the large view.

Bopnjour, cher Ian,

Hi Ian,
Classical view but always interesting, well framed with this man at work, a view without the smells ... tfs.

Hello Ian, I also saw these tanneries in Fez and it was an incredible experience, especially for the nose :). What hard work and so bad for the health. I suppose it is badly paid too. Impressive close-up. HAha, I am immune to every shops :).
Have a nice day

Hello Ian,
This is less of a cliché than these photos easily become, since it is more of a photo of a man at work than a general display of colours. Even if we don't know about toxic ingredients it's easy to realize this is a tough job and probably not very good for the workers' health. I prefer this kind of close view that doesn't display the "beauty" so clearly.
Regards,
Gert

Hello Ian,
An unenviable task and one imagines the dyers don't get paid that much. But, a source of much interest for photographers attracted by the vivid colours and the sight of people at work. Excellent close-up on this craftsman. Superb technical quality.

Hello Ian
It does appear to be quite a hazardous job and I hope (though I doubt) that the workers are paid enough for their hard work. Gloves, boots and a breathing mask would alleviate some of the issues in my opinion. A disturbing image well framed and the moment well captured.
Cheers!

Bonjour Ian,
J'avais très hâte d'arriver à Fes pour prendre une photo de cet endroit. Tu as décidé d'y aller de très près avec l'homme les deux pieds nus dans la teinture. Il faut le faire.
Amicalement

Hi Ian,i seen this scene in Marrakech me too and it's a pity to see workers inside toxic mix with legs. I like the different way to show something from there with this very useful close up and not the usual large view, well done! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hi Ian
Yes, i would most certainly visit the Leather Tanneries, but for some reason we don't often see THIS view. I wonder why. Its great to see a super close up version for a change. ya i've heard its somewhat of a health concern working here. Love seeing the man stand in there and getting super dirty. awesome. cheers

Hello Ian,
Yes, the leather tanneries are a must see in Fes. I visited the Chouara Tanneries.
The views from above are amazing and the scents a little adventure.
Wonderful and interesting to watch the production of leather on the same way as they did it a few centuries ago.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Ian
I am so glad I can only see this and not have to smell it. The tannery that I visited in Marrakesh stank so bad. They gave us sprigs of mint before entering. Tfs.
