Photographer's Note

450 years old Madrasa Ben Youssef in Marrakech is the largest Madrasa in all Morocco. Its 130 student dormitory cells cluster around a courtyard richly carved in cedar, marble and stucco. There is a little pool at the center of the courtyard with tile works (zellij) at the bottom. I was fascinated to see how the incredible stone, wood and mosaic craftsmanship came together to create a masterpiece of Islamic art.

Madrasa is a school whose main function is to teach Holy Quran as well as natural sciences, philosophy, history, literature and politics. Established in 859, Gamiʿat al-Qarawiyyin, another important madrasa in Fes, is considered the oldest university in the world by some scholars.
