The Old Medina in Fez is specifically home to three ancient leather tanneries, the largest being the Chouara Tannery, which has been washing, treating, smoothing, and coloring animal skins into soft, leather goods for over a thousand years.

When I was there only a few people were at work, like here.The group I was with made a big deal about the smell, especially some Belgians. But growing up in the Balkans where donkeys, sheep, goats, horses, fowl etc shared one's backyard, I didn't need to stick a sprig of mint under my nose as all the rest were doing with exaggerated antics. Still, one feels for those men down there and I wonder how much they get paid for their labours in all that pigeon poo. Regards. Klaudio.

This is a wonderfully evocative shot, the story is there laid before you, the senses are aroused simply by the image and it's brilliantly seen and composed. Superb documentary work, very good indeed but the smell was unbearable!! TFS

I am sure this place stinks....yet tons of tourists flock here everyday for these pictures. For us, whose been to the Park Circus tannery areas or even dhapa math, such smell is the way of our lives. Even in thumbnails these 'leather baths' looks very graphic...I wish I can see a closeup with one of the workers (we see 3 here)..
