The shot was taken when travelling on the dusty road/track which connects, from north to south, the three main Rwandan cities located on the Kivu Lake's shore. The distance between Gisenyi in the north and Cyangugu in the south is only of 248 kms, but due to the road conditions, it takes all the day to reach one from the other. Since the lake's shore road is wonderful because you are travelling on the mountains, with its fantastic sights on the lake and the picturesque villages you drive through, it is worth of do it all instead of the mainly asphalted internal one, suggested by the travel agencies. That one is more comfortable but longer, so the time to cover the distance from Kibuye (a picturesque town with its peninsulas and archipelago, nearly at half distance between Gisenyi and Cyangugu) to Cyangugu is the same. Consider also that when leaving to the direction of the capital Kigali, you will also take the internal road and there is no reason to do it twice.
Rwanda's landscape is composed of lush forests, gentle hills, volcanic chains making it one of africa's most beautiful countries. From the east to West and north to south, you get to discover one of the best climates with a great biodiversity and great game parks.
Multi-coloured flowers, giant eucalyptus trees, immense tea and coffee plantations, banana trees, etc..everything grows in Rwanda.
"The Land of Thousands Hills" is referred often to the country because of its undulating landscape varying in altitude from 900m to 4000m.
When observing this beautiful relaxing scene, my mind goes also to what happened in settlements like this, in 1994. Since was not really clear for me that what happened that yeaar in the country, I couldn't resist to ask respectably to my 28 years old Tutsi driver, how he survived to the genocide at the age of 14. He told me very well, with passion the terrific and very sad story of the genocide and his own one. His mother and three brothers were killed during that terrific days. Apart him, his father and two sisters survived. For months he was hidden among the thick and lush vegetation, which helped him to survive eating bananas and drinking water of the lakes and ponds.
During the 3/4 months nearly 1,000,000.- men, women, children were killed by other men, women, children. The victims were mainly Tutsis and in minor part moderated Hutus, who tried to help Tutsis and/or won't take part to the slaughtering.
Unfortunately and sadly there is no related commemorative day worldwide for such a terrific holocaust. Maybe because of the indirect role and responsability of some "important" countries of the world in it.

Excellent documentary shot showing us daily life in this remote part of the world that has suffered so much in the recent past. The after shocks of colonialism are still in place ... sad.

Hi Attila,
Good view on the village from a good and well chosen higher POV. The road is well placed in the bottom left hand corner, leading nicely towards the houses. It's nicely surrounded by the vegetation. The light is really enhancing. Thanks for sharing!

Attila,
Such a coincidence I see your photo two days after I finally got to watch Hotel Rwanda. Some western governments plus a certain Asian one continue to screw the poorer nations. What happened in Rwanda is now taking place in Chad, Darfur, ... Fine depiction of the village life in Kibuye. Enjoyed the well-written, candid note. Regards,

Hello Attila,
Besides the quality of this photo, what i like the most here is to see that they now seem to live in peace and slowly life seems to return to normality.
About your note, maybe you should say that NOBODY cared about them. Why? maybe because they don't have oil, or diamonds or something else. So, why should they interfere? there was no guaranteed return...
My words to them...SHAME, they should be ashamed for their silence, for their lack of action towar5ds what was one of the most if not the most brutal act of unhumanity since WWII, and some of them still 'shout' that wars like WWII never more, and what was this? a child's play?....
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers.

Hi Attila,
One could think that you were in an helicopter. It's a nice view that seems very effective showing a face of the life of those people. One can hardly imagine the tragedy that happened so shortly ago by looking at it.
No matter how optimist we may want to be about the 'international cooperation', reality keeps denying it. In 1994 was Ruanda, 10 years before was Ethiopia, now it's Darfur...
Regards, José.

Hello Attila,
What a naturally protected and quiet place but full with tears and aches when merged with your very informative notes. You very well captured an excellent frame under difficult circumstances. Splendid contrasts with greens and visitors. Congratulations.

Annyira jó pontokat tudsz kiszemelni a fényképezéshez!

Szia Attila !
Szomorú és elgondolkodtató történet. Nézem a képet,és olvasok. Gondolataim rohangásznak szerte a világban. Mikor nő már fel az emberiség??? Remélem képed és jegyzeted eljut a világ minden zugába.
A képhez csak egy kérdés. Honnan vetted le a falut. Van ott valami domb? Vagy épületről? Nagyon érdekes betekinteni egy másik földrész életébe. Gratulálok !!!
Légy jó !

Ciao Attila,

Hello Attila
From your high POV, this looks pretty much like any Indian village. The huts sit amidst banana trees & what looks like from this distance, bamboo (or sugarcane). Looks peaceful, but under the surface the undercurrents of the genocides, I'm sure still exists. It's a real shame, but that's how the world is today. The Western countries will renounce Burma, put sanctions because Burma has large oil reserves to be exploited. Rwanda has nothing to offer & therefore is of no interest, except of course selling arms for their civil war & mineral deposits.
Best Regards
Angshu
