Photographer's Note
The Drakensberg, or shortened to "The Berg",by the locals, is a dramatic mountain range that runs the East coast of Southern Africa..
It is one of those wonderful places in the world where you can loose your soul in its beauty- however you can as easily loose your life as it is cruel and often beaten by storms, harsh weather and extensive veldfires.. In Fact the name Drakensberg is transalated to Dragon Mountains.
This photo was taken over 12 years ago from the top of the "Amphitheatre".. Believe it of not it is a relatively easy days walk, should you base yourself at base camp (driveable) or stay at the Witsieshoek Hotel - Highest Hotel in the Southern Hemisphere (apparently). The path Zig Zags up the side of the high ridges, until you come to the Sandstone Ridge.. This is then transeversed by a steel chain ladder.. Once on top the views are dramatic..
So my apologies for digging up old digital images (tiny in comparison to todays J pegs).. However I just love this spot in the world- I place I must visit soon.. ..
Ric
PS Will post a few taken back in 2000- when still living in Africa

Hello Richard ,
Like a lot thiese volcanic moutains . They look similar to the ones in the Canary Islands . Interesting to capture them with a lateral light , to increase the contrasts and reliefs .

Ciao Ric,
Una formazione rocciosa spettacolare, la cui struttura č accentuata dal bel gioco di luci ed ombre e dall'opportuno formato in verticale. Bella la naturalezza dei colori, eccellente la qualitá. Complimenti.
Un caro saluto.

Hello Ric. I have never seen anything like these dark mountains before. I can see what you mean though calling this Dragon Mountains. The vertical format showing the dry grass in the foreground really adds favor to the scene, and the light shadows on the mountain is really nice.

Hi Rich,
I sometimes wondered that you do not show anything from Africa. This is old photo but excellent. The black rocks look really menacing, Dragon Mountain seeks a proper name. I like the contrast with the grasses in fg. I can imagine the view from the top. I hope we will see it from you. The last part of the trip with chain ladder would not be for me. But I will not be in this part. Pity... Stunning view.
So, in 2000 you were still living in Africa?
Warm regrad

Hello Richard,
I know of these mountains from primary/ elementary school but have seen very few images of them. I like the repetition of the shadowed spurs. Good sharpness & a superb high pov. Excellent light contrasts & sharpness. Tfs!

Hello Rich - Nice to see this, we went to Witsieshoek many years ago, magical place. Stayed at the hotel and the misty rain descended and barely lifted before we left! Your shot certainly shows the ruggedness of the landscape well. Think I shall have to go there again your shot is tempting me back. Take care and warm wishes Rosemary
