La traque aux éléphants
La traque est une activité passionnante de safari. Dans la plupart des safaris commerciaux, les animaux sont repérés grâce ŕ des sondes émettrices. Je me souviens avoir vu ŕ Chobe (Botswana), une lionne encerclée dau moins 6 véhicules. Pour le touriste, cest la garantie presque totale de voir des animaux sauvages. Le vrai safari est différent et ne convient pas au tourisme de masse. La traque aux animaux est faite par un pisteur et un chauffeur sillonnant avec son 4x4, la savane et la foręt sčche, au milieu de nulle part, sans piste ni route (voir photo complémentaire). Une trčs grande expérience est nécessaire pour débusquer les animaux, grâce aux crottes et au vol de certains oiseaux qui suivent les animaux, sans que ceux-ci ne nous repčrent grâce au vent. Il faut laccepter le fait quil ny a pas de garantie de réussite dans un tel safari. Mais je peux vous assurer que découvrir un troupeau déléphants au milieu de la nature est un réel bonheur. Bien que paisibles, en raison de leur force colossale, les éléphants peuvent ętre trčs dangereux.

Stalking the elephants
The stalk is an enthralling activity of game drive. In the majority of the commercial safaris, the animals are located with transmitting devices. I remember having seen in Chobe (Botswana), a lioness wearing a collar and encircled by at least 6 vehicles. For the tourist, it is the almost total guarantee to see wild animals. The true safari is different and is not appropriate for mass tourism. The stalk of animals is made by a tracker and a driver furrowing, savannah and the dry forest, with his 4x4, in the middle of nowhere, without track nor road (see complementary photo). A very great experiment is required to flush out the animals, thanks to droppings and with the flight of some birds which follow the animals, without those not locating us with the wind. It should it be accepted the fact that there is no guarantee of success in such a game drive. But I can ensure you that to discover a herd of elephants in the middle of nature is a real happiness. Although peaceful, because of their colossal force, the elephants can be very dangerous.

Un joli compte rond de points aujourd'hui ;o))
Depuis tout ŕ l'heure, je me demande i c'est toi qui est sur la photo, mais non je ne parle pas de l'éléphant, mais de l'élégant bipčde coiffé de son chapeau de brousse!!
Une belle photo bien documentée par la note et le WS.

WOW, this photo is amazing! Nature, colors, sharpness, POV, it's so real, I can imagine how excited it was to see an elephant so close in natural environment! It looks like the elephant is very old...I like the ws photo too, hope to experience a real safari some day! :)

Very funny title I love it. I love to be this man stalking the elephant. Maybe I will keep some distance between myself and the elephant. Great sharpness and clarity. I love the details and textur of the skin on the elephant. Color and light fantastic. Without the man would have been nice too. I'm sure you got one of that too. Maybe in the WS. I'll take a look. J'aime beaucoup cette composition intégrant un premier plan humain. C'est trčs risqué mais ça paie car l'image n'est pas classique du tout.

Here you were really close to the elephant. Is this always in a 4x4 vehicle or is there any walk?
What you say about the Chobe is very true and some times I felt it was too commercial. However, our stay at Oddballs Camp in the Okavango Delta was totally different. The only access to the camp is by plane and all the tours are by mokoro and walking. Our very experienced guide (he is close to 70 years old) made us walk a lot at a pace that my wife sometimes asked for a rest!!! And we saw elephants, zebras, impalas, giraffes, baboons, water buffalos, hippopotamus, many birds including the African Fish Eagle, miniature frogs, lizards, etc, etc.
The picture is excellent and the relative position of man and animals adds to the sense of distance. We can clearly see a second animal behind the trees on the left. Well done.

J'ai l'impression de me tenir derričre la personne qui fait face ŕ l'éléphant.
Pas de risque de charge ? Je ne serais pas tranquille ŕ une distance si faible.
Une image bien cadré dans tout ses détails. L'arche que forme la végétation au dessus de l'animal donne un trčs bon cadre.

Bonjour Jean-Pierre,

Je vois que je ne suis pas le seul a aimer l Afrique. Cette photo me donne sacrement envi de retourner faire un safari mais comme tu l as decrit, ce n est pas evident de trouver une structure pour le faire correctement a un tarif encore raisonnable.
Ce type de rencontre reste magique et les elephants sont parfaitement restitués dans leur environnement. La lumiere est tres belle.

Superb safari shot. There is clear connection between the man and elephant. This also shows that the distance is not very big. Those trees give good natural framing.

Good evening Jean Pierre,
The note is perfect, it really tells the story on how to do a real safari. The photo goes very well together with that note, including the human in front was a very good decision. It shows the interaction between man and animal...both maybe a bit afraid for each other, but for sure a great encounter.
No need to tell you about the technical part, as laways very good.

Fantastique prise de vue, la dame en premier plan et le vrai roi des animaux (:-) encadré par la belle nature environnante. Une composition excellente!!! La lumičre du soleil et les nuages font un beau duo.
Cette image me rappelle le film Hatari, des années 60, avec John Wayne ;-)

j'ai lu ta note avec beaucoup d'interęt! Je pensais qu'il n'existait qu'une sorte de safari,celle que tu appelles pour touristes,et je m'étais juré de ne jamais en faire,detestant tout ce qui me paraît trop organisé,sans surprises,et surtout avec trop de monde!Rassurée,je vois que d'autres possiblités sont offertes!
Ta photo est magnifique,avec de belles couleurs!Le vert lumineux des arbres contraste bien avec le ciel gris,et j'aime beaucoup la façon dont les branches encadrent l'éléphant!Je ne sais pas ŕ qui appartient la tęte,mais ŕ sa place,je ne serais pas rassurée!Je suppose que tu n'étais pas bien loin non plus,puisque tu utilisais un 22 mm!C'est superbe!

c'est le genre de safari que j'aimerais bien faire, la photo safari est un ręve de jeunesse que j'espčre réaliser un jour, superbe cettye photo ou cet éléphant est débusqué et pręt pour la photo.

On sent toute ta passion au travers de ta note, trčs agréable ŕ lire et instructive.
Comme Dominique, en regardant ta photo et en appréciant cette proximité entre ce magnifique éléphant et la dame ŕ l'avant-plan (excellente compo) j'ai pensé au risque de charge. Et plus encore en découvrant le petit 4x4 dans le WS. Pas męme un toit pour vous abriter. Mais en lisant ta réponse ŕ Dominique, je comprends que seules les rčgles de bon sens et de prudence peuvent vous sauver la mise en cas de problčme.
Tout un ensemble (photo, note, commentaires) qui piquent ma curiosité ŕ vif. Merci de nous partager ce moment précieux.

I just found your South Africa series.
This one is a beauty, a great on-the-spot action capture. I think the head of the man in front of you only makes the picture more interesting and adds to the setting. The slightly soft contrast and the lovely colours make this photo look great. Sharpness is excellent. You were certainly very close to the elephant when you took this shot. I wonder if the vehicle was moving when you took it. Thanks for the excellent note.

Hi JeanPierre!
Now this is safari! I love your POV - usually one tends to concentrate on the wildlife (myself included) and forget the people watching! This gives a really good impression of what it's like to stand face to face with one of nature's giants!
Makes me miss Africa so badly!
