Dar es Salaam at dawn

6:20 am. I guess it was after the muezzin had intoned aloud the first call of the day inviting the Muslims to prayer. Don’t remember, but do remember well the atmosphere of that early morning. I’m on the balcony of our modest hotel room. My teenage daughter is still sleeping under her mosquito net. The city is waking up. A rooster is sporadically crowing. In the street, some men are already out and gathered in small groups. They are talking, perhaps about yesterday news, or planning something for the day. In any case, they seem to be enjoying this cool hour, knowing the sultry ones that are soon to come. And then I have this idea that I should perhaps take a picture of those roofs against that pretty early morning sky!
