Photographer's Note

A baby elephant is following its mother into the bushes of Lake Manyara National Park.

Once again our driver got a notification from his 4x4 radio, then we were on a rush to find some animals in the tropical depths of Lake Manyara Forest. We didn't know what animal it was, as the driver didn't tell until we arrived at the spot. This time we stopped amongst a thick vegetation of huge trees and bushes so that we couldn't see anything for a while. At last we were informed that there had been a big family of elephants sighted. We held our breaths, waiting for a couple of minutes, and voila! A huge African elephant emerged from the bushes, proceeding as slowly as a construction truck, vigilant at the presence of intruders. Then came another one, this time busy eating the leaves. One by one, there appeared a collection of ten or more elephans, finally arriving mothers and babies. The babies were kept away from us, until the elders surrounded our cars and decided that we were harmless (see WS photo).

We spent almost half an hour photographing them from extremely close distances. In the end, they decided to leave us on the dusty track and move back into the forest, moms and kids leaving first. This photo was taken close to the end, and this baby was following its mom into the bushes.
