Horses for courses., a photo from Jammu and Kashmir, North

Photographer's Note

These horses transport tourists and villagers around the Sonmarg valley in Kashmir. There is no other way except walking to move around in the upper reaches of this valley. They also transfer lots of load to the hotels in the upper reaches of the valley. I saw a horse going up with 4 gas cylinders, now that is a lot of weight. But due to long periods of insurgency and terrorism tourist inflow into the Kashmir valley is very less. It has brought disrepute to such a beautiful place. These horses along with their owners have taken the biggest hit because of this downturn.

Hi Subho,
I like very strong foreground in here - the grazing horses are very elegant subject. The snow capped mountain create nice contrast with the green hill and give good setting for the scene. The only detail which bothers me is tiny black bit on the right which could be cropped very easily. Otherwise, very good picture with saturated colors and proper sharpness.

Thank you for sharing a beautiful image of this place like this. As you say in your note, this place is known for violent reasons, and from my home here in Europe, when I hear the name that is what I think of. But now, I have a much better image to visualize, and when I think of Kashmir, I will picture this instead. A fantastic scene, great positioning of the horses, and the light is just superb.

No this is what I call "al fresco dining with a view". These lucky horses are eating with one of the most beautiful views a person or animal could wish for. Impressive shallow depth of field allows us to concentrate on the 2 horses and yet appreciate the size and majesty of the mountains behind. The colours are true and realistic and the definition is flawless. A small constructive criticism is that I would have cloned out the small brown part of the horse (or man?) to the far right foreground of the frame. A small thing which does not take away from the beauty of the photo.

Composition and pov is spot on as It directs attention to the horses without being distracted with the majestic snow peak in the background. I love all the rich tones, sharp in focus finely captured and pleasure to view. I have one crit on you pp: the colours dont look natural with over powering blueish tinge, may i suggest you to check the RGB level and white coretions. Good to see you trying something different though. Congrats

It's possible to use a software to rorrect the UV dominant colour in altitude, that's why I have done a WS

The distance between the horse and the summit is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the détails and the colours of the mountain and of the horses. Well done, have a nice day.

A spectacular shot of mountain scenery, given scale and presence by the foreground horses. But I hope you won't mind a couple of minor gripes: the mountain top needs a little more "breathing space" (the top of the frame practically cuts it off); and there's an object (another horse?) and its attendant shadow over on the right which I find a bit distracting. These things are easy to fix of course. A quick WS will show you what I mean.
Your photograph reminds me of one I posted a few months ago. Here it is!

Hi Subho,

Such a pity that an area as beautiful as what we see here would not be able to thrive due to current conditions. Quite a telling note, which has enhanced the overall mood of this shot...which by the way, is beautiful!

A wonderful compressed perspective, bringing the foreground and background seemingly this close together. It really accentuates the grandeur of the snow covered mountains. There really is a strong sense of altitude and distance as well, and I really enjoy the layered visual of the three distinct portions of landscape. I feel like I need some oxygen just looking at this! :) Fun title too. Have a great day ahead.

A very good shot with a great feeling of open space. I like this image where the position of the horses creates a subtle lead in line to the majectic mountain behind. Thoses horses sure look happy to be there and have the best scenery to enjoy for themselves. They really make the photo.
