High above the black river, a photo from Porto, North

Photographer's Note

I want each picture I post to be totally different from the last one, so after an odd street photo, here comes a postcard.

I took this from a cable car during a ride of about five minutes on the south side of the Douro river. Across the water you see the old central area of Porto, while the roofs under me don't really belong to Porto but to the separate municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. This is where all the makers of port wine have their offices and showrooms.

Seeing this photo I was stunned by how black the river looks. Since all other colours are normal I suppose this is what it actually looked like from this angle at this time of the day. In most other photos on the site the Douro looks ordinarily blue, but on one photo taken by Craig (macjake) it is just as black, so I am in a good company. ;-)

Two workshop photos will show the cable car experience more closely. One close encounter with another gondola, one photo from towards the end of the line.

Hi Gert

Good choice of a vertical format with excellent color, sharpness and saturation. The inclusion of part of the city's iconic bridge at right adds place and context. The fg red roofs add depth and layering to the composition. Tfs!

Mostly high above the red roof-tiles of the famous wineries of Villa-Nove-de-Gaia, Gert, and well shown the city across the river.
Wonderful view of the Ribeira district colorful houses on the far side bank, the Clérigos Church-tower, part of the bridge designed by Eiffel which leads to the city center.

nice the panoramic view of this area of Porta,with the bridge on the right to adds depth and perspective in the scene as connecting the two banks of the river.The constructions on the hill with the falling light on them enhance even more their beauty.

Au premier coup d'oeil, on reconnait la ville sur les deux rives du fleuve.On voit aussi une petite portion du pont qui les rejoint. J'aime beaucoup ce ciel qui nous offre des textures extraordinaires.

Three nice pictures also the gondola is a nice detail.
Maybe through the movement of the gondola is picture a little bit unsharp.

Hello Gert,

The city looks so warm and welcoming, mainly because of those those roofs, no matter to which area they belong.
It isn't easy photographing from a cable car, I tried it in Germany, but the views are just incredible as you can see so much further than when down on the land.
I would have liked a complete view of the bridge, which I suspect I have seen on other photographs from Craig and Malgo, but, maybe you took that later.
I just love your w/s showing the cable car!
A bit different and with the cable car looking like a space ship!

A stunning POV high above the roofs of the city. The water is remarkably dark indeed. The city adds many appealing, bright colours, orange being the most eye-catching of them. I like how you just included the bridge as well.

The view and colors are very nice, but what is with the jpeg artifact, especially on the river? Did you copy this in low resolution to save space/bandwidth? I like the view of the cable cars in the WS photos.

Hello Gert, So this is this new attraction. I had to go through the high bridge and as I am afraid of heights, it was not a pleasant experience for me. I was so shivering that I couldn't make any pictures (although the views were splendid), trying to be so close to the middle as possible (but there are trams there). So going by this cable car would be a better solution. Nice view of the red roofs (this time no one was walking on them) and the other side of the Douro river. Interesting Workshop pictures too. Similar gondolas are in Xi Shan but there the ride is much longer.

I guess I never visited VN de Gaia. nice details of this famous POV showing the central part of the town and the river.porto and lisbon has different moods, porto is more severe and grey and lisbon is much more wide and sunny.

Hello Gert,
There's something strange with this photo on my computer. The water is indeed very dark but the water surface is completely divided into irregular blocks. I will have to take a look at this picture on another computer, at work for instance. Perhaps this is because you took the photo through a window but I don't see these blocks on the buildings or the roofs and nobody else mentions it ... Also the picture of the river in the WS doesn't have these blocks.
You present us here one of those spectacular views that Porto has in abundance.
Construction cranes still determine the skyline and also the church tower from where you showed us some previous photos.
It's a wonderful city and a great view over the roofs and the river towards the part of the city built on the steep slope.

I'm looking at these three photos with interest. I visited Porto exactly 10 years before they were taken, in May 2008. It looks the same, except for the cable car.
Nice postcard, I like the red roofs in the foreground and the delicate clouds in the sky. The river looks dark indeed, you would expect it to reflect the blue sky.

Gert, the pov allows to capture the two banks of the Douro river in Porto. The picture gives an insight to the activity on the river as well as the local architecture. The black river, the old bridge and the orange roofs are part of this district. Gondolas like boats are used to navigate here.
