Photographer's Note
LIGHT SURROUNDING THE TUNNEL II
Twice before I had posted photos of this unusual scene — as Light at the End of the Tunnel and again as Light Surrounding the Tunnel I. In the earlier shots I had with me a pocket camera, a Nikon Coolpix s600. In this photo I used the more elaborate Nikon D200 and a tripod. I rather doubt that there is substantial improvement in the photos, although the moods might be different because of the changing colors in the lights.
In the first of those earlier images the 60 meter (200 foot) long tunnel connecting the East and West Buildings of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, was presented with the walls of the tunnel in subdued light, and the end of the tunnel in brilliant sunlight. There the narrow parallel slats created an effective demonstration of one-point perspective. That photo is well worth seeing as a counterpoint to the present photo. The light show designed by Leo Villareal, an artist from New York, was unveiled, completely inverting the light conditions depicted in that earlier image — the light areas becoming dark, and the dark becoming light. In Villareal’s work, "MULTIVERSE," the passageway glitters with 41,000 light-emitting diodes (LED), inserted into the channels between its aluminum slats, creating a mesmerizing light show. The ever-changing pattern of lights are meant to mimic the universe (or still better multi-universes). The lights turn on and off in a choreographed manner, and create a swirling waves across the surface, and a suggestion of “twinkling stars, rushing water and bouncing polka dots.” What becomes clear in watching the patterns, however, is the random order in the patterns. A row of lights among the myriad present appear to have malfunctioned in the upper right. (I may have inadvertently captured the instant when the row of lights were off, in the ever-changing pattern.) In any event, I am posting a ws showing the 'malfunction' corrected in Photoshop.
I believe a tasteful way to frame a photo is a black-core, white acid-free mat, and a simple black metal frame, a scheme that I tried to replicate in this image. If this had been a real frame, I would make the white two or three times wider.

Hello Bulent!
I love those tunnels that turn out to be special places for the decorations with shapes and lights!
Your picture is very attractive with a very well chosen pov and an effective composition!
Sharpness, exposure, pp, contrasts and colors are pretty good features here too!

Hi Bulent,
Thanks for posting this shot--it's amazing what a difference the camera makes! The colours and tones are completely changed, yet both photos are still very good. I love the perspective and the depth of this shot. I also like the lines and curves of both the tunnel and lights, but also the moving walkway.
Thanks for sharing!

Hello Bulent
I clearly remember your first proposal of this tunnel.
Not so different but also successful.
I can use the same words :
You've done such a great work to bring the lines out for a graphical and strong result.
The way you've framed is perfect to propel us into the heart of this futuristic tunnel.
Incredible shot. I think it's one of my favourites since several weeks !.
It's still true !

Hello Bulent,
All three shots are excellent, but this shot is the most spectacular of the three and my favorite. A better camera and a tripod made a big difference. Also, your POV in this shot seems slightly different allowing the rotation of the changing colors and brightness of the lights to give a more dramatic effect and more clearly defined patterns than in your shot “Light Surrounding the Tunnel I.” I like the white mat and the black frame. Your work is superb!
Kind regards,
Betty

Good Morning Bulent,
I just love this shot!
It appears like a wonderful, illuminated, peacock tail!
Your pov is excellent to secure maximum effect from the shot. The light is so well managed.
I was sad that there was no exif data as, I use this camera and this lens and, in such situations, frequently get irritating noise in the photograph.
A great shot which I have really enjoyed viewing.
Have a lovely w/e,

This tunnel is great, and so is your presentation. I love the way the lights envelop almost three quarters of the frame. Bulant, interesting shot, this and the earlier one. I find it odd how the reflection from something can adsorb the slight and for a shadow of sorts, or were the lights pulsing, or is that the changing of color? Fine work as always.

Hello Bulent,
Thank you for this photo of this very unusual room. It is a spectacular illusion, a beautiful interior setting. You have managed the lighting very confidently. The people located near the vanishing point give a hint as to the scale of the image, but do not dominate or distract from the main focus of the tubular surrounds. I would love to visit the broad Boston-Washington-NYC area someday and soak up the wonderful sights and culture. A very important part of the world!
Best wishes,

Hi Bulent
In my view I like all of your tunnel shots, they have something mystical, in a way fitting to Halloween, which I as an European and Swiss never celebrated. I guess it's more an American thing. I like the effect of these countless lights and the tunnel feeling. Very good photo job. Thanks for your critique of my crowded traffic shot from Hat Yai.

I was thinking that if you were born at the time of Leonardo, surely you'd be a good painter, certainly a good artist, because if it is true that photography is the daughter of painting, photos like this can only be realized by who have a great artistic sense. An intriguing picture, Bulent, and an intriguing title for a mysterious thumbnail.
Comparing this with the pocket camera version, there is no doubt in my view that your better camera and use of tripod make for a much sharper rendering of the lights and slats, an altogether more interesting image. In either case the areas where the lights are close together make good test patterns for adjusting varifocal spectacles!

Hello Bulent,
I very much like the graphism of this image. Your POV is deliberate and extremely well chosen - the 3:1 division makes for an intriguing effect. The lights create an illusion of movement; by contrast, the moving silhouettes look static. A fine, clever shot.

Hello Bulent,
How are you? Hope that you are well..
This is superb! I really love it.(I'm not good at critique, I'll try if I can see the point:-D)
It is very imageinative. The lines are beautiful especially the colour contrast of white&black and the warm colour on the right of the image&left. The title +image inspire the viewer's imagination of the relationship of the life on the earth and and the whole universe. We can only see the beginning of the tunnel, but we never know what is the end of it. Everything is a journey, as life&tunnel lights , but it is a beautiful journey... Have a nice day Bulent.

A most fascinating lights effect in the tunnel,
Bulent.
The photojob is immaculate, the outcome has good depth, clarity and an attractive juxtaposition array of light-bulbs.
My cong.s for this one.
Have a nice weekend,
Ike
