Motion in a tunnel, a photo from Hong Kong, South

Photographer's Note

Hong Kong, inside Tsing Yi tunnel. Photo taken from a double decker bus going to the airport. The bus was in motion, probably 80km/h due to the speed limit in the tunnel, other cars were in motion too. I think all cars had the same speed, this is why all of them are sharp in the picture.

To Amos: I didn't hold the camera in my hands - 1/4s is way too long to hold it steady. I placed the camera on a small "shelf" next to the wind shield on the upper deck of the bus. The road in the tunnel is really smooth, that is why the picture is sharp.

About 15 minutes later I took City <--- picture...

Good shot! It's almost like a scene from a computer game. I love the way the curves draw the eye away to the vanishing point and the cars about to turn the corner. Can't make up my mind whether it would be better with a car closer to us, or whether that would just detract from the smoothness of the scene. Very well captured :-D

Incredibly clean shot for a tunnel! That everything is so sharp in a fast moving, low-light situation is a tour-de-force... Bravo Maciej, you have capture the moment with excellence!

Workshop is OK but I kind of like the colorfull flares, it add a touch of kaos to the otherwise very organised image.

this is really a both strange and beautiful pic.
Adrian said it in a few words comparing it to computer games : it displays the smoothness programmers like to provide as for backgrounds but also the sharpness of the main characters (here the cars).
My eyes really can't get accustomed to the fact the cars are so sharp while we are supposed to move, it's like being on a mechanic sidewalk.

Tremendous execution with great intent. The results of your work here have really paid off. Though the results may be chance like others suggest, you had the forethought to set the shot up as you did.

Your vantage point on the front of the top deck was brilliant, as it has put the camera smack in the middle of the vertical plane as well. This has added a great element to the framing.

I too have taken many photographs in HK tunnels, but none as effective as this.

I think all have been said, but from my part the softness of the road and walls in contrast with sharpness of the cars it's just fabulous! The composition of the cars also is and the distance from "us" is also great. A master-piece.

Fantastic Maciej ! I love your very inventive shot : that was really wise to think using the bus shelf to shoot like this. This mix of smart ideas, luck and ideal conditions make the result perfect to my mind. I'm not disturbed at all by the reflection on the shield.

I have a great feeling of speed, modernism when looking at this picture. It's really dynamic especially with the perspective created by both road and lights !

This is surreal and I love it!

Amazing stuff. There is so much here that could have gone wrong, but for some reason you've managed to create that perfect shot. You do well to succeed in capturing that perfect moment every time where others would consistantly flounder. A message to TrekEarthers: If you travel through some tunnels in Serbia, near Grdelica, drive carefully, as they are not lighten. And the road there is not smooth.

This photo is very very nice, the effect on the asphalt is incredible, so is the sharpness of the other cars.

This contrast (motion blur, but sharp cars) is very unusual and makes your photo unique. Our brain get a bit confused :)

Impressionante image ! Bravo pour la note qui nous en apprend plus sur la maničre dont as réalisé la prise de vue ! Cette image est vraiment irreélle ! Le filé du tunnel va contre la conception que nous avons de la photo de nuit en filé ! Ici c'est le décor qui bouge et les voitures qui sont fixe !

In your photo the road have motion and the cars have no movement... I take a shot a little bit different from yours... my road is freeze and cars have motion... highway...

Witaj Maciek. To jest naprawde super fotografia z kazdego punktu wizualnego. Zrobione w ruchu, a jednak jakby zamrozone tlo, wspaniala kolorystyka i clarownosc, idealnie wywazona symetria lini i obiektow, oraz glebi obrazu. Po prostu strzal w dziesiatke !!!
