Lord of the Graveyard, a photo from Hordaland, South

Photographer's Note

The winter is now officially over. It has not been the greatest here in Bergen. We had a cold end of 2010, but since that, the story has been rather boring. So here is a picture from the end of 2010.

Fedje is a small island on the western coast of Norway. It is located 2 hours north of Bergen and has only 580 inhabitants. The location out in the sea make sure that the wind conditions use to be among the worst in the country and the temperature never goes too far below 0 degrees. However, this period in December 2010 was both cold and chilly. So these were quite unusual conditions.

The weather didn't look good when I went out for a walk. But as the sky became darker, the church became more and more interesting. The graveyard quickly appeared as a good foreground, and my dad and I stayed there for at least 20 minutes taking pictures. It was very cold though, so we had to go in and out of the car sometimes...

My dad has earlier posted his version from those 20 minutes.

Hi Fredrik,
Very nice blue hour shot. I love the way the light illuminated so well on the charpal, it stand out very well again the blue sky. I also like the fact that the graveyard are mostly in the low light, giviing that little bit of spooky atmosphere. Very moody shot, it give a little goose bump on my skin.

I'm not at all a specialist of night pictures , but I like a lot this one . Well chosen POV , excellent framing , fine effect of the triangle of shade in the FG . Superb contratss of lighting and colors , too .

It is very interesting to compare this capture with your father´s. You have chosen a slightly different POV to include some of the shadowed foreground. This provides a nice balance. In both cases, you have captured the golden colour of the illuminated church against the dark blue sky. Beautiful picture, both of them.

very pleasant blue hour photo.
I have recently photographed a similar theme:
SEE HERE, also church with a graveyard.
It is very difficult because the church also in your case is well lit while the cementary is dark so it is very hard to get it balanced.
You did a great job, great blue hour sky.

Hi Fredrik,

The church has a beautiful architecture. I like the dark, less dark, lightfull and dark again areas.
This tombs covered by snow are a bit scary.

The church a bit more to the background as in your fathers one, is to me better.
The stones in the graveyard are smaller and lead the eye more to the church.
The triangular shape in the foreground is a good contrast to the bright light on the church walls.
I especialle like the sky: dark with yet some light in it, and soft as silk.

Light here is almost surreal. Yellow toned flooflights of the church. Violet on snow where street illumination and late blue huor natural light mix. Gravestones rising up from the snow. Well done.

Very nice composition, light on the main object attracts an eye, shadow diagonal divides the photograph into 2 parts of shadows : mid-tone and dark shadows, very attractive.
