Youth Power, a photo from North-Western, West

Photographer's Note

I tend to shoot backlit images when taking photos in Africa. Dark skin can be tricky to photograph. I find when shooting against the light but (spot)measuring the light on the face I see a nice reality in people's skin, and a wahed out background that makes the subject stand out clearly.

Hi Joop,

Wow...surprised this image hasn't gotten any points. It is a very strong image. The only thing I could fault is the shadow on the boys lip, but other than that it is really great.

I realy must agree that I'm surprized this hasn't got more positive feedback. It is really such a powerful portrait.
"Youth power", I like that title. Africa has had a history of troubled times the last 300-400 years, and the younger generation is where the hope lies.
The photo has a very clear and detailed overall look, one thing that I don't really understand is what kind of background you have used. Did you select him and paste or was this how the background really was?

Wonderful expression and use of fist in the portrait. Can some of the flash glare be removed from the eyes? It distracts me. Very strong photograph.

These PIERCING eyes, Joop... wholly arresting. What a marvellous face! Am shocked this image has gone relatively unnoticed. I hope it will be discovered more, for it is a stunner... lovely bw and the boy's face is irresistably and intensely beautiful.

oh my goodness, this is so intense...apart form capturing an unusually strong expression, you handled the light really, really well. i love this picture.
