Photographer's Note
Two women take a break on a street corner in downtown Herat. Two years after the U.S. took over Afghanistan, most Afghan women are still wearing the burqa outside of their houses. The local warlord Ismail Khan doesn't seem to be particularly interested in changing the rules regarding women any time soon. One positive change is that now the women are at least out and about in great numbers where as under the Taliban rule, they were prohibited to leave the house without a male companion.

Great documentary picture, though I felt sadness seeing these women being "forced" to be dressed like that. The picture makes me appreciate more the life I have, it also reminds me there are lots of woman in the world who are not as lucky as I am.

sad indeed, but thank you for sharing this image with us. it still has a very strong impact. great that you kneeled to shot it, good DOF too; it seems thats they were waiting for sthg, a bus? or just there?

First at all, Linda, congratulations for this excellent photojournalism shot. Above technical considerations (good composition, great use of DOF, nice colors), the picture tells a very touching real life story. I’ve prepared a Workshop version, which enhances some technical aspects of the picture (mainly, the contrast). Hope you’ll like it!

I like this capture, the soft blue and green is a great combination. The composition is fine too with the women taking one half of the picture and a low position in that. I think you should crop just a little on the right to get rid of the blurred thing at the upper part of the edge. Well done!

Great photo, good position of the women on the left, right DOF and sharpness. You can say it comes from National Geographic.
I have never been there but I don't know why we have to "change rules" where we do not live (don't mind, only personal opinion)

Rather mysterious. Painful too. I can never understand how men can subject someone they live with to such indignity.
