Photographer's Note

Two women take a break on a street corner in downtown Herat. Two years after the U.S. took over Afghanistan, most Afghan women are still wearing the burqa outside of their houses. The local warlord Ismail Khan doesn't seem to be particularly interested in changing the rules regarding women any time soon. One positive change is that now the women are at least out and about in great numbers where as under the Taliban rule, they were prohibited to leave the house without a male companion.
