Sleeping banana carrier, a photo from Dhaka, North

Photographer's Note

This boy from North Bangladesh has moved to Dhaka to find work. He carries bananas in this basket every day from early morning till evening. At night he sleeps in the same basket in the open storeroom. When I visited him the next day he told me that since he has no education and his father is sick he had to find work. He did not succeed in finding work in his home town and chose to migrate to Dhaka although he did not know anybody there.

Such an unfortunately typical story for that part of the world!

I always have mixed feelings about photographing people in poverty and distress; it seems like an intrusion, and that I am taking advantage of their misery to make art. On the other hand, I am conveying the image of their situation to the outside world (or so I hope).

So this is a very evocative and poignant photo. Technically it's also good, though the legs are out of focus - a minor point which does not really take anything away from the power of the image.

A very nice photo of a sad reality. Judging by the size of the basket, this frail boy must be carrying huge amounts of bananas.

ahh I know that feeling - a very nice shot _ I like the small depth of filed and the focus it puts on the boy's face - very nicely framed for maximum effect.
