Photographer's Note

I’m being a little sarcastic on the title. It derived from the boy’s t-shirt on the left.

Not your typical happy children picture, the situation is rather sad. We were hiking through some small villages in Northern Cambodia on route to Laos. We came upon a small house, our local village guide took us in to visit. The parents were not home, out in the farm or forest hunting or working. The boys were by themselves. Sad and dirty all they had to eat was some rice and banana. We didn’t bring much with us, I search through my bags looking for some snack food that I can give them and some spare change…

PP note: I desaturated the colors here a little to give it that muted tone.

Ratanakiri has a population of about 60,000 'Khmer Loeu' people. ('Khmer Loeu' refers to all of various minority peoples of the different tribes and is a controversial term.) The Khmer Loeu are actually 12 different groups of tribal peoples (including the Tampuan, Krueng, Kavet, Kachok, Charay, Prouv, Phnoung and Lan), living in the jungle and mountains, still practicing many of their traditional ways including slash and burn agriculture, animism, traditional clothing and housing, etc.
