Photographer's Note

It is hard to believe that this charming old wall with a balustered window and the scenic country road are bordering Choeung Ek, a former orchard, but now mostly remembered as part of the Killing Fields located 17km south of Phnom Penh. Here, the Khmer Rouge regime executed about 17,000 people between 1975 and 1979.

Less than a hundred meters away from this gate, a group of young students were leaving their school adjacent to this agonizing site, most of them possibly too young to fully appreciate the significance of this tragic place in older Khmer people’s personal and collective memories...
