Photographer's Note

Taken on Lake Tonle Sap, near Siem Reap.

Generally I think I am better at writing notes than taking photographs. However, I find myself unable to express my thoughts and emotions at this image. As a fat, luxury-loving westerner with happy, healthy kids I cannot find words to describe this scene.

I believe there are numerous reasons for the loss of limbs in Cambodia. Landmines, farm accidents and - I was told by my guide - deliberate amputation of children in order to elicit sympathy and dollars. I pray to God that is not true.

The daily life for this child is to row in his makeshift boat to passing tourists and beg for a dollar, in the same way as this young boy

I thought long and hard before posting this image but if it makes just one person here realise how lucky they are in life and subsequently reach out to help someone less fortunate, then I think it was worth posting.

Will this image stay with me and change me? I hope so.
