Photographer's Note

The name of this huge square in Beijing evokes a symbolic photo that many of us still have in mind, that of a lonely student obstructing a column of tanks of the Chinese army ... it was in 1989.
An emblematic image of the student revolt of the time with a very strong movement in favor of democracy. The repression of the authorities and the army put an end to these demonstrations on June 4, 1989 with shots on the crowd of students, there would have been some 1800 dead said, one true massacre !
While visiting this place, I asked the question to our guide on the precise place where had been taken the famous photo of the student facing the tanks ... and here is our guide to answer me with a sketch of smile and a little air embarrassed: "Ah, I was waiting for this question! It's the same every time, you, the foreign tourists you think only that by visiting this place! ". Well, then he quickly told me that it was here on the avenue that passes in front of this facade where we see the portrait of Mao. There was a time when the guides were not allowed to discuss this subject with foreign visitors ... moreover, this period is ignored in the history books ... and many young Chinese never finally heard about this event !
