Almost a dying trade in some countries...

The scene is interesting to me and it's one we dont see much of these days. I do see repair shops in cozy modern shopping centres and the whole appearance is not the same, dont have that great smell of leather
and polish either. This cobbler - noble and honest profession, was ensconced at a small alley somewhere in Canton old quarter where the lighting was low and I didn't want him to see me taking his photo, so I stood
well away waited for the right moment before releasing the shutter.

Having him look up and grin at the camera would have given a bog standard ugly tourist snap, whereas this I believe is a glimpse into somebody's life without eye connection.

This is the sort that I really enjoy seeing as well as taking - someone getting on with his work in his natural surroundings..

Setting: 300 mm, 1/100 sec, F4.2, ISO Raw 200, 0946 hrs, converted to mono

I like enviromental portaits a lot and this is a great one!
I like his concentrated facial expression, doing his work while smoking.
This is from corner to corner a great shot with fine details to view.

your photo is very interesting because it is really a man at work, and with enough hindsight to have the whole atmosphere of his workshop in the open air;
now to have his gaze would have been anything else, but you have to speek with him and to have a mutual understanding, but that means other framing too

A sensational image, to which the B&W gives a timeless air, this shoemaker in his street workstation, is an image that has already disappeared in many countries, perfect as you have captured him doing his day-to-day work.

Amazing daily life image. It looks perfectly timeless and you captured the best possible moment. I agree - a candid works really well rather than a portrait with eye contact.
Black and white is the ideal medium to present it.

Lovely shot, Abmdsudi, the kind of scene I'd take too. Converting to bl/w adds a certain timelessness which suits the topic, even though streetside crafstmen and traders like this one are all too rapidly disappearing, even in China. Plenty left though, thankfully.
