Durgapuja is the biggest festival of Bengal. On the first day (Saptami)morning a banana plant, two wood apples and banyan leaves are tied and diped in the rivers in Kolkata it is in the ganges. It is known as 'Nabapatrika' but in common terms it is called 'Kalabou' because in Bengali 'Kala' means banana and 'bou' means wife. This entire thing is dressed with sari, traditional bengali ladies attire.Actually it is worshiped alongwith Devi Durga for prosperity of agriculture and plants. It will be immersed with durga idol on the lastday (Dasami) of puja ceremony. Durgapuja consists of four days vig. Saptami, Astami (2nd day),Nabami (3rd day)and Dasami.Durga Puja is also called 'Akalbodhan'because in ancient time puja was not performed in this time. Sri Rama started durgapuja to get support in this time to kill demon Ravana, according to the Ramayana.
You can see a Bengali lady beside the Nabapatrika in a traditional bengali attire and the veil she has put on the head is called 'Gomta'.
