Photographer's Note

Shot taken from Shikara on Dal Lake in Srinagar, the capital of Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

For us Bengalis, fish and rice is the staple food. The woman who was catching fish from the lake, could make out perhaps that I am a Bengali and wanted to sell her catch to us. She was zealously displaying various types of fish and wanted us to buy some. Me and my wife tired of having meat and eggs for days really wanted some fresh fish for lunch and almost took the plunge. But thinking about the hassles of cooking without any arrangements of our own we decided not to give in to the temptation :-).

hello Subho neighbour,
Nice portrait of the fisherwoman proud of her catch. and how she must have been disappointed that you didn't buy such a nice fish (carp?). And reading you were tired of meat, I must go to Bengali. In Rajasthan no meat, no fish, in Pushkar even no eggs, mainly vegetarian food, not for me :).
Very interesting houseboats. Excellent composition.

Hello Subho - I am most interested in what type of fish this is, it has a lovely golden colour and looks good to eat. I too would be tempted. A lively DL shot with plenty of local colour to enjoy. Funny, I think of fishing as a more masculine job. Warm regards Rosemary

although she was probably a little disappointed.

personally, I'm not a fish lover at all, so i'd just stick to the rice :)

love these cultural daily shots, we can learn so much from just the items in sight and the clothing.

Hi Subho,
This is a wonderful composition! I could see this as an advertisement for a TV show based on the life of these fishers. The light is perfect, bringing excellent detail to the buildings in the background, the woman is composed perfectly, the fish looks beautiful and nay, even tempting to eat (and I do NOT eat fish at all) and the water is as soft as silk. Beautifully done, if I were there, I would probably have bought it. And then not known what to do with it :)

The golden fish the woman is tempting you with really looks appetizing. I had a fascinating tour of Dal Lake long ago but I didn't manage any photo as good as this.

What a wonderful picture of daily life with this fisherman in the foreground, and showing us his capture as a background the beautiful wooden houses anchored on the lake.
It made me excited to see this picture of you, for I visit Srinagar very many years ago, before political problems and when tourism was very usual, we stayed for three days in a beautiful wooden house boat and everything was an unforgettable experience .
Very pretty color, which gives a lot of life to the image.
A magnificent brightness management, sharpness also
is perfect for enjoying the details.

Ah I have learnt something new: that the staple food of Bengali is fish. This fish looks delicious and so tempting as you say. I can see why you were tempted, but it was not practical to buy it. Beautiful colours here and the light is well-controlled. You timed the shot superbly, with the lady proudly displaying her wares and flashing you a smile. An excellent and compelling part of daily life, expertly recorded.

It's a carp but I would not eat it as Dal lake's water is contaminated for sure I know that place and slept on a sikhara, high quality of image and pleasant scene with a character proud of her catch, all the best, good night
