Photographer's Note

I am still in Mahabalipuram (or Mamallapuram) in southern India in 1987. This time no temple is to be seen, but in this small town you are never more than a hundred meters from the nearest temple, or a large sculpture looking like a temple. However, I also wanted to show these girls on an excursion from their school. They were eagerly examining some trinkets, probably made of seashells or possibly corals. The bus stand was near, so probably they wanted some souvenirs before going back home.

I know the colours of today's two photos are not perfect, but they are much better than in the first scans I made years ago. The sky is dark, so another heavy monsoon shower was probably to be expected any time. It seems that the slow Kodachrome films were not at their best when the light was bad. Photos taken under perfect conditions and with a good exposure are fairly easy to scan perfectly, but I have found that photos from dark and cloudy days are quite tricky.

But I show these photos anyway, because the girls and their clothes were more important to me than perfection. An alternative version in a vertical shape is in the WS.
