Photographer's Note

This is a picture of the Sundial at Jaipur Jantar Mantar (Jaipur Observatory) in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The sundial is accurate to within 2 seconds and is built at the correct angle that it keeps correct time all year round. It was built between 1727 and 1734 by Sawai Jai Singh II, and is still in excellent condition. The small party at the base can be seen reading the time from the gnomon's shadow.

The enormous (and highly accurate) sundial was required in order to be able to cast the most correct horoscopes possible, and as a tour-de-force to prove the influence of the Jai Singh's new capital city, attracting scientists and philosophers from around the world.
