Photographer's Note
Fresh from Delhi...I squeezed in some time between office, unpacking and other sundry work to take some pictures of prominent monuments in Delhi. Still a long way to go before totally settling down.
Emperor Shah Jahan built Delhi's most magnificent monument, the Red Fort. In 1638 Shah Jahan shifted the Mughal Empire's capital from Agra to Delhi. A new royal palace known as Red Fort (Lal Qila) was constructed. It was begun in 1639 and completed in 1648. The name comes from the massive red sandstone walls that surround it.
The Red Fort has walls extending up to 2 kms. in length with the height varying from 18 mts. on the river side to 33 mts. on the city side. The fort has two main entrances, the Delhi Gate and the Lahori Gate. The latter faces Chandni Chowk, the city's most crowded but diverse market. The Red Fort gets its name from the use of red sandstone in its construction. It is situated on the western banks of the Yamuna (which has since changed its course).
Passing the Naubat Khana, one comes face to face with the Diwan-I-Aam (hall of public audience). Here the Emperor would sit on a marbled paneled alcove, studded with gems, and hear complaints of the common people. It was in this flat-roof hall, having rows of cusped arches, that the emperor met his subjects. The emperor sat on a lavish marble-paneled throne set within an inlaid and painted alcove, built into the back wall of the hall. The throne was also studded with precious stones. A platform is located below the throne where the announcer read out royal farmans (royal edict) and list of gifts to be handed out to important people.
The Diwan-i-Aam, or Hall of Public Audience, is where the Emperor meets his subjects. It is built on the outer portion of the Red Fort, away from his own private quarters.
60 pillars support the roof of the impressive Diwan-i-Aam. A magnificient work of architecture without a doubt.
Workshop : Desaturated the photo. The graphical effect of the columns and the arches have IMO come off very well.

Beautiful palace! The red colours and the details of the arches and columns are exquisite. Excellent perspective with the arches digging deep in the background. The people give an idea of the size of the columns. Nice sharpness and well composed image. Thanks Angshuman.

Namaste Angshuman,
I’ve visited the Red Fort and I remember this impressive place where you’ve took this photo very well. You’ve done a great job for showing architectural details and conveying the feeling of the Diwan-I-Aam. You’ve done an interesting choice, opting for symmetrical composition as you take advantage of the colonnades repetition.
Nice work!

Très jolie architecture. C'est vraiment impressionnant et tu as eu la bonne idée d'y laisser quelques personnages qui donnent la taille réelle del'ensemble. Très beau cliché.

Welcome back Angshu: I hope teh move has gone well.
I think you know I love these kind of shots. The perspective is wonderful with all those repeating arches. The people of course give it scale. The red stone is beautiful and the contrast with the green is superb, so I was not expecting to like your B&W version as well. However the conversion has worked well and I like it equally to this one.
Good work

Dear Angshuman,
You are truly in your elements here, the historical Diwan-I-Aam seems to come alive through your lenses. The red facade works wonderfully well against the green. I would anyday prefer the colour version over the B&W, much more details on the columns.
Best Wishes

Olá Anghu, nice to see you here and I hope that everything is going ok with your settling. This one made me smile, because I was just checking my Indian archieves and found one with a similar architecture...but in a white version, from the fortress of Agra. Just added in WS, as I thought it would be interesting to make a comparison of the two architectures.
In Portugal this red version would be amazing, but in Indian, I think it's pretty common. Don't get me wrong - this red stone fascinates me. Excellent symetric perspective in a perfect composition. Love the way the background is filled with greenery.
Best of luck,
ricardo
p.s.- your b&w is quite good, but obviously I prefer the color version :D

Hi Angshuman,
This POV and the way of doing the setting give an excellent result in perspective and depth.
The repetition of these architectural elements, the columns, the arches, creates a great geometric effect, and the direct and flat light creates a few elegant shades. The incorporation of the people uses us as reference to the scale of this palace. And besides, the green vegetation in background contrasts very well with the reddish tones of the rest of the set.
It is a good work,my friend.
Best regards,
Josep

Nice to relocate you here, Angshu after an unavoidable hibernation due to your settling down at Delhi. Well, the shot nicely brought out the beautiful geometry of the arches along with the effect of red sandstones used in building such magnificent, historical landmark. The left side, if cropped out in my view, would have balanced the symmetery. I am not sure. TFS. Regards.

The symmetry works well here, Angshu, and the presence of the people helps to give the structure scale - so full marks for composition. I am intrigued as to why you had to desaturate - was the colour too overpowering? Cheers . . . David

Hi Angshu - at first I thought this was from the fort in Agra, as I have a similar photo from there, but the deep red colour and restoration of these arches make it much more attractive, unfortunately the Red Fort was closed when I was in Delhi, my sister's name is Lal, it means ruby or red wine in turkish.

What an impressive palace this one, is really impactant. Comparing with the desaturated version of the workshop, I prefer the coloured one, that reddish tone contrasting against the green of the forest in the background enhances the majesty of the place. Only one thing Angshu, is my eye or seems as if the columns were slightly tilted to the right?
