Photographer's Note
Clicked this image yesterday...
it was raining heavely.. while looking for a "bhang ke Pakore"... a toxicating dish served as a "prasad" on the birthday of "lord shiva" i came across a ralley carrying "cawarn" a doli shaped structure to the temple of shiva...
and this guy was intense and in fearce determination to reach the temple "Bare Footed" coming from lalru... a place about 150 Kms away from the temple...
(Lalru is thought about 15 kms from chandigarh.. as Mr. Rajeev Mudgil corrected me...)
The temple was 150 kms from the village sadhu was coming from... i just could gather lalru from what he said and also 150 kms....
his dedication was as intense as his face is..
There are times i have seen people even crawling their way to the temple and hence i always had diffrent thoughts about human dedication....
the negative space as so much asked about is because of the reason that i wanted draw the line between the two.. i may not have done it successfully... as it needed comparision.... and also the fact that it appealed to me more than the conventional framing for such a shot...
hope you like it....

Hello Kapil,
the intensity is well shown in this depiction with very good placement of the subject..his eyes are piercing and the b/w choice is doing good to the shot..!! however I would have loved a bit more of his turban here to complete the frame..!!
Good work.>!!

Indro

This is a powerful portrait, esp. the eyes. However, I don't know what to think of the empty darkness on the left that occupies more than half the frame. Having him more in the center, cropping the sides, or shooting vertical come to mind. Good work otherwise. Regards,
Hakan

disagree with below, more turban would distract from face perhaps a hint of detail in black left ,but it still works very well as it is -kinda pulls you into his dark eyes. Original compostion which is lacking in many portrait travel images.
nice one!

Hi Kapil,
This is a beautiful, striking photograph. The intensity of his face is amazing. Great use of black and white, it really brings out the detail in his face.

Nice go at an interesting composition. Maybe a bit 'too shocking' for my taste, makes it less natural. It's sort of an extreme interpretation of the rule of thirds using pitch black darkness. I'm surprised that the eyes actually focus exactly on the direction of the viewer and are not slightly tilted to the left of the frame.

Hi Kapil. Impressive portrait and very strong in the B & W. I especially like the composition with the face all in the right and the big black part in the left. I haven't seen it before, but it works very well. So you have inspired me in my future portraits, thanks. Great work. Greetings Jens :-)

An unorthodox shot Kapil.
The negative space on the left dosn't suggest me anything. The problem worsens with the eyes of the subject piercing the eye of the viewrs and not your camera lens.
Had the eys been focusing on left, the symmetry and the composition would had been mind blwoing, but the shot seems to be doctored.
I like the cropping from the right but the cropping from the top and darkeing of tourban from the left doesn't convince me.
I like your words, very true, perhaps you overwrote the distance. Lalru is just minutes away from Chandigarh, on the way to Ambala City. I have been to lalru and Ambala inumerous times.
I think you added one more zero to 15Km inadvertantly.
What so ever its a brave attempt but sincereity is needed.

Rajeev

This is something which is bound to get mixed reactions Kapil. This is unorthodox and critiques will enjoy writing here.I will go with Rajeev....what he said according to me is correct, the left part is creating some sort of irritation just like the eyes of the Sadhu. This is too much one sided affair.

Hello Kapil,
This is truly an intense portrait that captures emotion and personality perfectly. The lighting is flawless and highlights all the features of the man. The positioning of the man in the frame creates a good composition due to asymmetry.
Great photo.

Hi Kapil
Amazing portrait. The face is not only emerging from the darkness but gives the impression that light is straggling its way out and forming the face dispite the darkness. The eyes are so intence that you feel them through your mind
Very nice shades of grey on the face. No coror here and this is correct. Great placing at the right side so our eye to go gradually from darkness to the face.
I am impressed

Already Indro said all and I agree with his comment.I would like only to add two things:the black in the left part is too much and still your image is very strong, wonderfully composed and the b&w increases the power of this look
All the best

Kapil, great composition, excellent contrast. But I think that people learn from the critique more than from the pats on the back. The selection job on the head-piece is not that good, looks a little sloppy, which is taking away from an image that is very strong and has a lot of character. Just an opinion and hope it is helpful.
Cheers,

Beautifully presented, strong portrait...
The look in his eyes !!!
There are gazillions of Hindu faces on TE,...
To be noticeable - you have to be different...
You've succeeded Kapil, quite skillfully.
Great stuff

Hello Kapil,
This is one of the very best portraits I have seen on TE. The intensity is well captured in the photograph and the use of shades and lights is the thing which I admire most in this photo. His piercing look is just perfectly captured through your lens. Wonderful work.
