Photographer's Note

A magical hour watching the sun slowly started to rise above the horizon casting the warm glow over Straits of Bali.

This was taken at a small fishing village in Banyuwangi on the tip of East Java, using Grad ND filter to balance the sky and foreground areas while keeping the shutter speed relatively fast, as the approaching outrigger canoe was bobbing about....

Hi Abmdsudi,

You're capturing well this seascape by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the sentimental spectacle in which the sun just sets under the horizon. It's also tasteful for the surrounding nature of the calm sea, the sky dyed to setting sun and the peninsula with silhouette in the distance. And, the outrigger canoe draws out a good impact in this image.

Your use of the GND filter has given you an excellent sky with good colour in the rising sun. The reflected colours across the sea are attractive and realistic adding to the early morning atmosphere very convincingly. I can almost hear the gentle lap of the waves in this shot. Nicely done! A great shot - love the colours and there is enough detail in the FG shadow to make the boat interesting rather than just a silhouette. Such a warm orange for a sunrise quite incredible. Love it.

It is indeed very magical scene and this image is very personal for me, I've sailed those outriggers in my younger days in the Philippines. Awesome pov and it has good dof with nice details. I need to look into ND filter since I like taking pictures at sunrise and sunset. Very well done, tfs.

Sunsets or sunrises are always eye catching, by the color of the sun, but after we have to look for a suitable landscape, the outrigger in this case, balancing the rising sun. The use of the gradual neutral filter cannot be seen on the sail, how can you explain this?

Yes it seems s magical capture with the orange tones given by the raising sun reflecting on the sea waters
Well managed composition to catch the canoe with a well chosen shutter speed
The more I like are the different tone gammas of the sky

Hi Abmdsudi,
What a beautiful sunrise! I rarely get up early in the morning to catch the sun rise, especially on vacation. Lately, I have been able to get a shot or two of the sunrise while I am driving to/from an early morning meeting or to work.
I love where you have placed the sailcanoe (I just invented that word). It looks like I need more glasses for my main camera's lens, right now I just ha a circular polarizer filter, mainly to protect the lens.
