Photographer's Note
Hunters attempt to spear the whale from their's Demo Sapang boat, off the coast of Lamalera, Indonesia. Inhabitants of the tiny village of Lamalera in Indonesia still hunt sperm whales using traditional methods. They have no motorboats, harpoons or ropes but still manage to bring home a 23m whale which provides food and materials for the whole village.Pic by Ardiles Rante. (Watermark inside)

Hej Ardiles,
It's a very impressive image that actually though belonged to history, I know that japan of some strange reason has some permission to hunt whales and Norway for scientific reason but Indonesia, sad anyhow.
But, as I said a fantastic picture...

Hi Ardiles,
Very exciting looking shot, with the giant wail tail splashing. I like how you were able to compose this scene with the hunters positioned near the whale so we can see everything happening. Very wll seen.

Superb shot. Wonderful framing and the action has been caught at the critical moment. At least these people are killing for their own genuine needs, unlike the 'scientific research' claims of some other countries.

Hello,
though I hate killing animals I must admit that your picture is excellent. The traditional way without using technical devices gives the whale somehow better chances. Still I feel sorry for that poor animal.
Best wishes

Amazing proportions are given here.. See monster in contrast with small boat with some people.. Such a sad fact, that they'll win :( Unusual shot.. dynamic, documental, succesful really!

Very impressing, feels like a glimpse of a past century, I never knew about Indonesian whalers. People need to eat, off goes Moby Dick! How often do they do this in a year so to say?

Hi Ardiles, Wish I'd seen this before I went to Indonesia, I would have extended my trip for sure. Perfect timing in this shot, showing the most iconic part of the whale, leaving us to imagine the size, and the primitive small boat hunting it. cheers, Steve

This is a great.
I always wanted to go to Lembata for a old school whale fishing experience.
It's a shame and I am jealous when I look at your shots.
Great photojournalism.
