Photographer's Note

This picture was taken at the Kishiwada Danjiri festival which is a city in Southern Osaka. The riders you see are ontop of a danjiri, which is like a portable shrine on wheels (rather than being carried) it is beautifully crafted with a variety of carvings featuring various religeous figures. Each danjiri is worth over $1,000,000 which is entirely donated by local people and businesses.

The Danjiri is pulled by hundreds of people through the city streets with the most exciting times being when they turn around the corners at breakneck speeds while the riders try to balance on top. Every year riders are injured when they lose their balance, and insurance premiums on some local properties situated on tight corners are extremely high as the danjiri often lose control and damage them.

At Night the danjiri are lit up the danjiri are paraded around the city streets along with music, singing, dancing and drinking.
