Bajau Lady, a photo from Sabah, East

Photographer's Note

Of all the ethnic races in Sabah, the most colorful and ornamental than most is the Bajau. Bajau is pronounced with a strong J as in Jaws.

Generally inhabiting the coastal plains from Kota Belud to Tuaran, this local horsemen and women donned themselves during festival with decorative costumes, intricate and colorful.

To get a glimpse into their lives, there is a weekly Sunday Fair in Kota Belud, which is about an hour drive from Kota Kinabalu. Not only you could get a glimpse of their daily lives, but so too their cultural and delicacies.

This photo was taken in the same series as the previous three postings. It was taken during a Sunday Fair, in Kota Kinabalu in a street called Gaya. The lady was part of a cultural troupe performing cultural dances during the opening of the Borneo Safari 2004.

She was standing under a "Bunga Manggar" which is really a long stick with a plume of flowers on top. Exposure reading was taken from her face and over exposed by 1/3. This rendered her face "correctly" exposed but overexposing certain areas outside the "parasol".

Very colorful to be sure. Nice simple portait here. It looks like you were working in pretty bad light here, very bright and contrasty. Obviously softer light would work better. Overall, I think the whole photo is slightly overexposed, but this is a pleasing shot overall.

I don´t agree the phot is over exposed.. maybe you could do some levels adjustments.. very nice colors, composition and model.

I too disagree with Darren. The effect of the light depicted is pleasing to me for what it's worth. A very pretty young lady that will be added to my theme folder for the same. God's best to you my friend! Tim

This is a very nice portrait, Rabani. The colors are amazing. I agree that the background is a bit overexposed, but I like it this way. Anyway the exposure of the face is perfect.

I also find this pix quite successful and I think the over-exposed pastel colors on the left are a perfect underlining of the delicateness in her smile, without taking any attention from it.
Beautiful headdress, beautiful eyes, sharp focus with no harshness in her features, your shot compliments her as much as she compliments TE with her radiant beauty.

Beautiful - you did a really good job with the exposure here, Rabani! The colors come out bright and vibrant, a very well balances color composition.

Th extremely bright light is working for this shot IMO. Its making the face radiate and the colorful headgear is even more eyecatching. I liked this a lot.

Superb portrait. Bagus sekali! Excellent sharpness, color & dof. A good national costume type of shot too. Maybe Id crop the left up to & including the pink, to remove the distracting highlight? Still a great shot though. Well done!

Fantastic effect, created by the combination of vivid colours, superb light and a beauty, Rabani! Love the way you composed the shot with the close look at her face, together with the so well managed DOF - creates a very tender feeling, emanated throughout the whole picture. Maybe I am against all photographic laws about the light, but I really love it here as it increases the feeling. Very well done!

Your handling of the lighting and exposure has produced a stricking and colourful portrait. The detail and clarity of the head-dress is stunning. The only distraction is the white pole on the left, but it is often easy to criticise these things when your not there. Excellent image which I've added to may favourites.

A beautiful portrait which leaves the batch and is among one of your best, to my taste. The colors are shining, attractive, magnetizing the eye... and the composition is just perfect. Sharpness and DOF are both so good too. I love the left background of the picture, with the pink, blue and yellow in blur, answering to her hat's colors. Cheer! Marine
