Photographer's Note
Another from Mongolia. 2006 is an auspicious year in Mongolian history. It marks the 800th Anniversary of the Great Mongolian State and will be honored by a string of nationwide celebrations that will last for the whole of the year.
A featured part of the festivities will be the Cavalry Ride. The five-hundred-man cavalry is comprised entirely of soldiers and has been made possible thanks to cooperation from the Mongolian Ministry of Defense. As the cavalry emerges out of the grassland steppe in a cloud of dust, a fearsome spectacle is relived. The sight of the procession of soldiers marching in a straight line reminds us of Genghis Khan's mighty army.

Hi Benjamin. This really caught my eye. I think the lighting was great and the positioning of the 2 front riders perfect.
I also like all that dust they were kicking up, it created a neat tan haze.
Well done!

wonderful shot of this soldiers. I like the sharp details of their wear as I like the action. The dynamism of the photo is also amplified by the dust in the air that is paritally hiding the soldiers behind. Wonderful scene!

this is a superb shot. Great framing, a nice moment of capture and good colours. The light is very strong and the rider to the left has an underexposed face. But this is minor as the scene you've captured is awesome. Very well done.

Vraiment belle image dynamique avec une focale parfaite et une profondeur de champ qui met en valeur les cavaliers en premier plan. Le mouvement de course des chevaux figé est très esthétique.

Very powerful shot. The colors the dust the noise the atmosphere...and you froze the horses in air.
With their uniform this isn't a horse race, but a battle. This matches any still from the battle movies.

This is such a great action shot, so full of the pride and spirit of the cavalry. I love how you've shot it at just the right moment to get the horse's hooves off the ground. The colors of the clothing really stand out in all that beige and brown. I think this looks like a wonderful work of art, a painting hanging in a fine museum. Well done, a spectacular job!

My eyes wish for a less square frame, but not much problem with it anyway. The contrast is perfect between the dusty low-lighted background , giving depth to the image (especially as it's more compact from the squarish frame) and the foreground, where everything participates to give a great energy to their gallop. Colors, handgrips, off-grounded hoofs. Marvelous moment, and marvelous compo!

This photo is cinematic in its depiction of the energy of the moment. The haze of the sand kicked up by the horses, and the more leisurely progress of the group in the background, also contribute to the dynamic quality of this superb photo. My visit to Mongolia was not during Nadaam; I would have enjoyed watching this scene. Stimulating that sense of wishing to be there is yet another mark of an excellent photo. Congratulations!

A fabulous shot, Ben - it looks just like those paintings of the horsemen that you see in Mongolia. Perfect timing and composition. I am not sure whether the separation between the foreground horsemen and those in the background is due to just the dust haze or whether you have partially desaturated the background - either way it is an effect that really enhances this image. Hello Benjamin,
I can only join the chorus of admirers of this astonishing action photo, which I plan to adopt as one of my "favorites." The composition, exposure, light, timing are all sensational. The succinct, but infomative note is very helpful as well.
You made a comment about my lectures on cruises. I am a professor of physics, but I also do art and archaeology. It is mostly the latter two areas of expertise that have brought invitations to speak on cruises, which as a professor of physics, I would never be able to afford. Take a look at my "Intro."
But this photo of the Mongolian horsemen, is truly one of the finest shots I've seen on TE.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Olá Ben, there are days in our life that are unique and remembered for a long time. That's what I feel in this 5th of August of 2006 of yours. Hi Benjamin,
Very powerful shot. The colors the dust the noise the atmosphere...and you froze the horses in air.
With their uniform this isn't a horse race, but a battle. This matches any still from the battle movies.

perfect composition! the only thing i can critique is the framing, it could be better, but the whole rest (colors, capture and sharpness etc.)is flawless!
p.s. the first horse looks as if it was going to fall, doesn't it?

It strikes me that Asian men are usually somewhat shorter than their Western European and American counterparts. Here, these guys actually look taller than their horses! These must by some county fair ponies or something... they certainly don't look 16 hands high at the shoulders!
