Hi Caleb. All these faces! The thanaka is worth recording of course. There's a little line under he chin, shadow, left by the flash - get a diffuser to go over the flash head, it's meant to soften the flash shadow in situations like this. If you want to go further and burden yourself with equipment, a small folding reflector would be even better - you get someone to hold it up to one side (you, the subject, and the reflector make the points of a triangle), and point your flash at the reflector instead of at the girl - softer more natural light.

The softness of the lighting on a subject depends largely on the size of the light source - a flash is a tiny source, makes stark shadows. A reflector is a larger source, makes softer shadows. But it's more kit to carry round.
