Photographer's Note

At one time, the plain of Bagan was rich and fertile. Now it is little more than dry scrub. It is the women who enrich everyday life with their work ethic.

These ladies pass by the Minnanthu Lei-Myet-Hna (to their right), heading south. The temple, still actively maintained by the villagers, combines with a former library, ordination hall, preaching hall, chief monk's residence, dormitories, alms house and a rest house to form the monastery complex. Most of these buildings, within a walled compound, are in considerable disrepair. It all dates from the late period at Bagan, i.e. the 13th century.
