the essence of burma III, a photo from Mandalay, North

Photographer's Note

a burmese woman in mandalay.
both burmese men and women are very conscious about their beauty. they put this paste (i've forgotten the name) on their cheeks. it's supposed to be good for their skin. also a lot of them wear these straw hats, which are different from vietnamese hats.
this is a very different portrait from me, while taking about this one i was thinking of david alan harvey's photograph. in my other "essence of burma" portraits i was thinking of steve mccurry.
so anyway i was just experimenting with the composition here.

you experimented well, sohrab. I think I would have also tried to get her right shoulder on the shot, but thats me, I´m not very brave when it comes to cropping. ;)

I think the paste´s name is Tanaka or something like that, what I heard when I was there is that they got protected from the sun using it. About the picture I have the feeling that the angle from you took it and the shy look & smile of the woman match couriously well. This is the magic of the impredictible in making photos. I can't say which of your two favourite photographers this one reflects and, it's better this way because then there's something unique about the results rather than merely being a reproduction of someone else's style.

Anyhow, the crop is tight and that's good-- nothing to distract from this woman's lovely face. Contrast of her cream shirt and the green wall is great-- there's something very 'Kodachrome' about the colour of that wall... :)

My irrelevant question is, did you happen to find our her name? I think just the mention of her name as a title would do much to compliment this, any the many portraits you have. There's nothing so significant, so complete yet so simple about learning someone's name.

Very hard to make work..A bit of fill flash for the eyes and thats about it...I think we all think of Steve Mccurry when we shoot portrait..I do anyhow, the man is a God!
