Photographer's Note
A slight diversion away from the comforts of Friesland, as my thoughts go out to my dear friends in Myanmar. Whilst they have struggled this year to contain the virus and domestic travel was due to be resumed on February 2, they now have a perhaps not unexpected, but disappointing coup to contend with. I hope for my friends that their long struggle for democracy has not been in vain.
The photo was taken in the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon a couple of years ago during my 9th trip.

Hello Elaine,
A very good portrait of the praying woman and a fitting tribute to the Burmese people. I have only been twice to that country, and that was a very long time ago, but I still remember with warm feelings the gentleness and hospitality of most people I met. They deserve better than this.
Best regards,
Gert

Mingalaba Elaine!
We Burma lovers follow the bad news from this fantastic country with it`swonderful people and I´m sure they are very angry like me.This photo is a perfect symbol to show not only the desaster of burmese people, NO the Rohingya, people, Syria, Mali,Sudan, the Uyghurs and many other persecuted minorities in this rotten world.
I take this photo to my favourites with tears in my eyes.
I`ll write you soon an e-mail

Hallo Elaine,
Dit zijn steeds de mooiste portretten, dat u kan maken.
Geen modellenwerk, maar zuiver een oud vrouwtje met geloofs overtuiging haar ding doet.
De handen en haar gelaat spreken boekdelen.
Heel mooi foto werk, bedankt.
Groeten uit Vlaanderen,
John

Hello Elaine,
It is a great shock and a sadness that a country seems to be moving backwards, with reference to the freedom and the democracy of the people!
This is a heartwarming portrait of an old lady, devout and sincere in her message to her god. Her face and hands are particularly well captured.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)
On FB, this morning, I saw a young lady performing a dance exercise. The video she was making inadvertently recorded the black vans heading through the city, the beginning of the coup!

Hello Elaine,
The face and hand gesture of this woman are filled with so much emotion. It feels like we are sharing a very intimate moment with her. It's tragic that the people of Myanmar must live through more unrest, and that democracy will take a step backwards. It's such a hopeless feeling when events like these occur...

Hello Elaine,
Relatively little news about Myanmar has reached us, at least about the extent of the pandemic in the country. The country seems too weak to take the right measures against the virus.
Now when it is once again run by a military regime, I fear that attention for the pandemic will weaken. Usually such regimes do not envisage the well-being of the population.
Of course it also turns back the clock in the early democratization process.
I hope this woman's prayers are heard. This population deserves much better in all areas.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Elaine
A superb portrait of the old Burmese lady. May her prayers be answered. Hoping the Military get pressured internationally to do an about face. Winding the clock back to 2010 was not a smart move on their part. Nice use of a shallow dof. Tfs!

So sorry for the people of Myanmar. It feels like not so long ago, on 8 November 2015, I was in Yangon watching the results of the first democratic election with the crowds in the street, just outside NLD office... Didn't last long.
Great photo that illustrates the quiet struggle of this wonderful and yet so unlucky country.

Hello Elaine,
A timely photo when we hear about the violence pouring through Myanmar. A great portrait of an elderly woman praying for a better future for her country and the people who live there.
Great composition as well as colors, light and sharpness.
Best regards,
Zbigniew
