Photographer's Note

The Magic of Bagan has inspired visitors to Myanmar for nearly 1000 years. Bagan covers an area of 42sq.km containing over 2000 well-preserved pagodas and temples of the 11th-13th century.

The town of Bagan (formerly spelled as "Pagan"), central Myanmar (Burma), situated on the left bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River and approximately 90 miles (145 km) southwest of Mandalay. The site of an old capital city of Myanmar, Pagan is a pilgrimage centre and contains ancient Buddhist shrines that have been restored and redecorated and are in current use. Ruins of other shrines and pagodas cover a wide area. An earthquake on July 8, 1975, severely damaged more than half of the important structures and irreparably destroyed many of them. The whole of the Buphaya Pagoda, for nine centuries a landmark for river-boatmen, tumbled into the Ayeyarwaddy and was carried off by the waters.

Hi Lucie,
The mist gives this very stron atmospheric perspective. The amount and shape of towers is amazing. Only the treetops assure that this one really is from our world.

hi lucie, thanks for sharing this great image! actually, i've seen a similar one on TE before, but this one shows the temples so wonderfully. myanmar is definitely a place i'd like to visit. great image and great capture! well done!!

Wonderful pic, I've many of that kind here on TE but each is special. I'd like to see that kind of scenery with my eyes one day. I love all those pagodes in silhouette standing in the mist. Very good light, colours and compo.

Wow Lucie! You've posted a few other shots from this place before, but I think this is the best one yet! The light in this is extraordinary, and it allows us to see the repeating shape of the pagoda in different depths of space, farther and farther away. I like the framing too, with the long horizontal showing the temple and nothing else. The overall effect is very mystical. I'm adding this to my favourites!

Hi Lucie - I enjoyed the shots with the hot air baloons, but I prefer the timeless quality of this one, with the same spectacular light and mist as the previous ones. There is probabaly no other place in the world with so many exotic silhouettes, even the outline of the distant mountains adds to the fairy tale atmosphere.
