Photographer's Note

The young Prince Siddhartha seeks out the reason for life's suffering. The hope for enlightenment is depicted in the bud of the Lotus (water-lily). Here he is sheltered by the Snake King.

This painting is high on the wall of the north entrance hall in the 12th century AD temple, which lies outside the city-wall of old Bagan, on a cart track not far from the Shwe-san-daw stupa. I think it a masterpiece! The painting probably dates from the 18th or 19th century.

The temple was built in the reign of Sithu II (1174 - 1211 CE), and its name means "Crowning Jewel". The genius of this temple lies in the unity of art and architecture.
