Photographer's Note

This is Suman standing next to the Ngozumpa Glacier further on from the village of Gokyo in the Khumbu region of Nepal.

Suman was our Nepali companion, colleague and friend during our trek and the most fantastic cook while we were in base camp before our climbs on Island Peak and Ama Dablam.

Suman needed some acclimatisation before we went over the Cho La pass (5350m) so he came along with Adam and I up to the fifth lake above Gokyo. We had a fanatastic laugh and I spent most of the day dodging his well-aimed snow balls and showing him the great sport of "trundling".

Trundling involves starting a rockfall along the steep moraine walls of the glacier. One rock would be dislodged and this would cause a large amount of rock to crash down and a huge cloud of dust to billow up. Trundling is very funny and addictive and Suman loved it and he would not stop doing it. We thought we had created a "crazed trundling nutter" as he spent all day doing it.

Suman is the most remarkable cook I have ever met. At base camp we wouldn't see him all day but we could hear the incessant roar of his kerosene stoves going the whole time. Then for lunch and dinner he would deliver a huge variety of food, up to five courses. Pizza, pasta, cutlets, soup, potatoes (the list was endless and delicious) and jelly and cake for afters! We were always flabbergasted by what he produced and stuffed full too.
